In echo's simulated internships, interns work remotely in an entry-level position for a simulated company. They work directly with AI-generated co-workers who fill a wide range of positions and departments, including hardware and software engineering, marketing, sales, data science, product, HR, business development, and many others. By working with these coworkers, they get to see what the day-to-day work and responsibilities look like for many different jobs in a realistic working environment.
Interns participate in online meetings where all of the employees from the company come together and share updates, questions, or anything they need for their work. Interns are then assigned tasks to complete. These tasks vary depending on the department but are designed to be at a high school level and to be completed remotely on the intern's own schedule. For example, they might be asked by an electrical engineer to find 3-5 examples of the types of trucks used to transport cold foods in the U.S. because the electrical engineer needs this information to design a sensor compatible with the vehicles used in the company's target market.
The goal of our simulated internships is to give students the same kind of experience they would have if they interned for a real company without yet knowing exactly which career is right for them and without yet having specific technical or industry experience. After gaining surface-level exposure to many different positions, they can see if any of the specific positions or departments seem appealing. If they identify a department or position that they like, they can join another internship within that specific department and gain closer exposure to the jobs in that department. If no positions seem appealing, they can join a simulated internship in a different simulated company with coworkers in a different set of jobs.
At any time during their internship, they are able to reach out to employees in other roles and ask them about their work or their job, and the employee will answer any questions they have, just as if they were in a real internship.
